 News 7/27

1. Jon just returned from a last minute trip to Colorado and is returning all e-mails this week.

We have decided to not do the meetings with 13/O athletes until the season begins when we will do them during practice times. They will only take about 15 minutes per swimmer.

Returning swimmers who are 13/O - show up to the practice group you ended the spring with and we will make shifts from there.

2. All returning 13/O athletes that can volunteer at tryouts - please show up about 15 minutes early.

3. The USA Swimming Eastern Zones Age-Group Championships were held August 8-11 in Buffalo, N.Y., with six Montclair swimmers participating on the N.J. team, in competition against 10 of the other 11 LSCs which make up the Eastern Zone.  Phillip Kang, in the 11-12 age group, returned for the “top 8” evening finals in 4 of his six events, with two second- and two third-place finishes, including a National Age Group Reportable time in the 200 meter Backstroke of 2:27.48, two seconds faster than his prelim time, which itself was almost two seconds faster than his seed time!  He earned 26 points for the N.J. team, which finished 7th out of 11 teams, an improvement from last years’ 9th place finish with 12 teams competing.  Joshua Sembrano competed in same age group in the 100 and 200 back,  and Chris Davidson and Phillip Jones both competed in the 10 & Under division, in the 100 fly and 50 free respectively.  All swimmers achieved respectable zone cut times.  In the 13-14 year-old group, Joveny Avendano went to Buffalo almost directly from his first appearance at Y Long Course Nationals, swimming  the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 medley relay at Zones, and Dennis Hall-App swam the 200 backstroke and moved from 51st seed to a 27th place finish in the 50 freestyle, taking six tenths off of his J.O. time.  Congratulations to all of the Zone swimmers!

2. Order of events for HY Bluefish Meet has been posted.

 News 5/22

1. We have been closed out of NJ LC CUP on the weekend of June 16th and 17th - We have replaced this meet with Huntington YMCA Bluefish Summer Invite June 8-10. If you want to go you must e-mail Jon by Monday (Memorial Day) 5/28.

Note - A Montclair Hosted YMCA LC National Qualifier has been added to the meet calendar. Please keep checking the meets and events page for updates along the way.

2. Reflecting on the team banquet we would like to thank all those who were involved with making it such a great success. In addition we would like to thank the parents board, the officials and all the volunteers, swimmers and parents who made this year so successful. Also we would like to wish our seniors well as they finish out their swim carreers with us this summer and move on to a larger world.

3. Based on coaching staff reccommendation we will be inviting certain individuals to train this summer at an alternate location in the mornings. With an increased number of athletes swimming year round we feel it best to explore additional summer am pooltime. More info to follow.

4. While we will have practice on Sunday, there will be no practice on 5/28, Memorial Day - have a great holiday.

5. Practice on Sunday PM has started for 11/Older athletes for Team members only.

6. Obviously at this point, Spring practices have started for all. All athletes should be regularly attending. We use the Spring and the Summer as an evaluation period for the fall tryouts and group placement. Individuals who's commitment level is below the expected standard will have to retryout in September - See Team Handbook for more information about expectations.

7.  We are only 10 weeks from the Long Course Championship season. If you plan on swimming at YMCA Nationals, JO's, Silvers or Bronze, you need to be back in the pool ASAP. As you know it takes months to get into great swimming shape and only weeks to fall out of shape. The NJ Long Course season is an extremely short period of time compared to the short course season and if you are looking forward to excelling this summer you need to start training now.

8. The front desk has asked us to ensure that all swimmers bring their membership cards and that all swimmers memberships are current. This is a safety issue - we are a YMCA and the member service staff does their best to make sure that everyone in the building belongs in the building. Let's do our best to make sure the Swim Team is a role model for the Y.

9. JULY JUBILEE entry is due to Jon by 5/30 - we will not have meet info by that date, but we need to be able to prep the entry ahead of time. We do not like getting closed out of meets and want to make sure this doesn't happen again this summer.

10. Reminder - e-mail Jon about meet entries and CC them to BG. If you do not get a reply back from Jon, he did not get it. Telling us on deck doesn't work.

 News 5/9

Due to Time Constraints we can not speak about every swimmer in the program at the Team Dinner (this could take days)..... but we will speak briefly about the individuals who competed in Charlotte (YW's) and Fort Lauderdale (YM'S).....and we will also do a quick overview of each age group(8-under,9-10,11-12,13-18) and season highlights. Last year the brunch was 4 hours long (10am-2pm) and this year the Team Dinner is 3 hours in length(6-9PM).....so I thought it best to condense the coaches speeches......

RUTGERS SWIMMING AND DIVING NEWS

At the same Feb. 9 meeting where the Rutgers Board of Governors confirmed Rutgers' President McCormick's $500,000.00 "retention" bonus for staying at Rutgers the last 5 years, and awarded him an additional $100,000.00/yr. for the next 5 years (all in addition to his $525,000.00 annual salary), the Board refused to reinstate any of the 6 Olympic sports - including Men's Swimming and Diving - which they have cut "to save money."

This was in spite of action by the New Jersey Assembly's Higher Education Committee the day before, unanimously supporting a resolution to reinstate the sports, and is in the face of an identical resolution which has been introduced by a bi-partisan coalition in the N.J. Senate.  With Rutgers returning to our legislature for its 2007-2008 funding, it may still be possible to save these sports.  Write to your State legislators (find them at http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/members/legsearch.asp) and ask them to support reinstatement of the 6 Olympic Sports at Rutgers, and to oppose further taxpayer support for the University unless it listens to ALL of New Jersey's athletes, not just those who want to train for the NFL.

THERE ARE NO PRACTICES THIS WEEKEND, FRIDAY 3/9, SATURDAY 3/10 or SUNDAY 3/11

REMINDER - DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS SATURDAY 3/11 AT 2:00 AM - YOU WILL LOSE AN HOUR OF SLEEP SATURDAY NIGHT - YOU NEED TO PLAN AHEAD FOR THIS AND GET MORE REST BETWEEN SESSIONS OR GO TO BED EARLIER!

1. The large pool is still closed. All athletes who have a meet this weekend - practice is in the small pool from 5:30-7:00 PM

All other practices are cancelled!

Remember there will be no e-mails or web updates this weekend - so call the front desk - if the large pool is open we have practice. If it is closed we do not.

 News 2/15 - 2

We are unsure of the status of the large pool for tomorrow, however we do know we will be able to run at least the 530-7:00 practice (everyone in the small pool). I will do my best to post what we are doing tomorrow by 2:00 PM.

If all else fails, call the front desk at the Y to find out if the large pool is open and if you are swimming in a meet this weekend and we do not have your group's practice, go to the 5:30 practice.

For the weekend, we had modified the practice schedule (listed below) so we could cover both meets and get everyone who is not swimming a meet a practice. That being said, we can not run any of the practices this weekend if the large pool is not fixed and none of us will be able to update the web-site or send team e-mails so the best bet it to call the front desk and if the large pool is open we have practice. If it is not we do not have practice.

Saturday 2/17
1:00-2:45 - All 11/Older athletes regardless of group
2:45-4:00 - All 10/Under athletes regardless of group

 News 1/16

1. Meet schedule has been updated. There are a few changes to it highlighted in red. NJS Mini Champs date has been changed, States is at Gloucester, 11/12 Champs has been added etc..... Take a look!

2. For the YMCA Championship season - all 8/U athletes will swim at YMCA 8/U Champs. For the rest of the YMCA meets use the best times report listed at the top of the meet results page and "Sharkey's Time Standard Grid" on the time standards page to determine eligibility. If you make 4 or more state cuts you can not swim Silver or Bronze, If you make 3 or more Silver cuts you can not swim Bronze

3. High School Swimmers - In order for High School times to count for USA and YMCA Swimming, we need an official meet result, either in the form of a HY-TEK printout, an automatic timing printout signed by the meet official, or an official meet result signed by the meet official.

3. For High School Swimmers, the rest of our "dual meet" season is optional. You must talk to your primary deck coach about whether or not you should be attending these meets.

4. It is crucial that you are well rested for championship meets. In a lot of cases that means you will need to spend the night at Gloucester or even Rutgers if you have an early wake-up. Ask for your coaches advice if you have any questions on this. We do not have hotel blocks for states or silvers so you are on your own for this. Look into Deptford or Mt Laurel. The athletes will not perform well if they are not well rested so this is vital to their success.

5. On 2/3 we will be running the second annual Post Groundhog Day Qualifier. This meet will offer every event there is - start thinking about what events you need and once the meet info is posted e-mail Jon your events by the due date.

6. The last day of Clinic is 2/4. 8/U swimmers in clinic are eligible for YMCA 8/U Champs and all 9 & Older clinic athletes are eligible for YMCA Bronze, but you must Jon know if you plan to attend these meets by the date listed on the meet grid (which is off the meets and event page of this website) Clinic swimmers will then be on break until we start Spring clinic. The First day will be 4/29. Registration for that will begin on April 1st.

7. Your Fall/Winter season is over after your last meet.

8. YWCA Junior/Senior Champs has been re-named to the Sunkissed Invitational. Don't panic. It is the same meet, same format and lucky for us it is still in the same place at the same time. We may refer to this meet at YW's or the Sunkissed Invitational, but more often then not, Charlotte - They are all the same meet.

9. The Sunkissed Invitational begins on Thursday at 3:00 PM and ends on Sunday night. If you plan on going to Charlotte please plan your travel around these times.

10. DO NOT ASSUME YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT BACK AT PRELIMS/FINALS MEETS. We are a team where if you make it back you are expected to swim at night. This includes Y States, Charlotte, Florida and JO's. You also have to be prepared to race every day at multi day meets for relays if you are not in an individual event and relays at night. Also if you are at multi day championship meet you are expected to arrive at the pool and warm-up even if you not competing that day.

11. DO NOT ASSUME YOU WILL NOT MAKE CERTAIN MEETS. If you have a successful championship season you can attain levels that you were not expecting to. We expect all of our athletes compete at their highest level championship meet. If you swim at Bronze and make Silvers you get to swim that event at Silvers - same holds true from Silvers to States.

12. YOU MUST SWIM IN YOUR HIGHEST LEVEL YMCA CHAMPIONSHIP MEET TO GO ON IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES.

13. Our team policy is that if you do not compete in your highest level championship meet you must re-try out. Please keep this in mind when making your schedules for the spring and where necessary talk to your spring sport coach NOW because the seasons overlap.

1. For two of the dual meets this weekend, a few notes:

Boys A - Somerset Hills in Under Construction - Enter the building at the entrance at the far end of the parking lot. This is the temporary main entrance. They are VERY limited on space so pack light and be prepared to be squished in the stands. Also of note, they will need some extra help running the meet as theit timing system is down because of the construction.

Girls B Team - You are swimming at Hillsborough Township YMCA as listed on the directions page. DO NOT GO TO SOMERSET VALLY YMCA BRANCHES IN  BRIDGEWATER OR SOMERSET.

2. Last Chance to get into the Bluefish meet - you must e-mail Jon by Friday 11/17 if you have not already if you are going to the meet.

3. An eligibility report is NOT and entry - this lists who is eligible for a meet. If you come up on an eligibility report you still need to e-mail Jon if you plan on going.

4. Both Bluefish and Holiday Classis are trials/finals meets for some age groups. If you place in the top 16 and you are in a trials finals category you are expected to swim the event at night.

5. At dual meets athletes are EXPECTED to stay in their suits and until the meet is over and then do a team cheer after the last relay.

6. Do not tell a coach if you can not be at a meet - e-mail Jon and Brian. We have about 280 swimmers on dual meet teams and we will not remember if you tell us. You have to e-mail us or write us a note.

7. Looking ahead - we will have a different Holiday Practice schedule for Thanksgiving time and Christmas time. Check the website often over the holidays.

8. Put you name on all your swim stuff, including suits, fins, goggles, paddles etc... All the kids on the team have stuff that looks just like yours.

News 11/1

1. Clothing sale orders are DUE today!

2. It is imperative that everyone be on time for the Great Turkey Meet this weekend. Scratches are due 15 minutes into warm up as the meet is deck seeded. There should be no problems finding the facility, directions are on our site on the meet page and on the directions page. If the coaches don't see you on time you will be scratched (taken out) of the meet. Relays are established during warm up. If you are late you will most likely not be in any relays.

3. Last Chance for getting roster updates and changes to Jon. We will be re-printing shortly. If you are not getting e-mails from the team, you never e-mailed Jon and asked to be put on the e-mail list. This includes Sunday clinic groups also.

4. We will hold a regular practice schedule on Friday. There will be no team practices this weekend due to the Great Turkey Meet. We will however have Little Dolphins and Stroke of Genius on Sunday.

5. You must check to see that you are in the meet before traveling down to OCY. We have an updated entry posted below today's news. Check this out - some changes have been made and some athletes have been added and removed for various reasons.

6. Again, a reminder - for YMCA Dual meets you are entered unless you tell us by the Wednesday before that you can not go. Reminder, in order to go to championship meets at the end of the year you must attend 4 dual meets.

7. For Invitational style meets ie. Great Turkey, if you are not going to attend, you have to let us know ahead of time or in the event of an emergency contact a teammate that you know is going and can tell the coaches.

8. Check you family files. EVERYONE on the team and in the stroke clinics has a family file in the file cabinet on the large pool balcony. These are filling up pretty quick. Please get your stuff regularly.

9. The coaching staff would like to thank all those individuals who took the officials classes so far this year. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who worked this weekend. If you had never been to a Montclair YMCA meet before, now you know how crucial it is for smooth operations that we have good volunteers to help run them. Our team can only be as good as our volunteers. Thanks!

If you have recently taken an YMCA officials certification course, please contact me via e-mail so that I can set you up to apprentice at upcoming dual meets while waiting for your test results.  When you have received your officiating card and welcome letter, please put a copy in my family file (HUELBIG) for the team's records. If you are a USA official that has not spoken with me, please put a copy of your certification card in my family file for the team's records.

Thank you for your cooperation. Eileen Huelbig ewhuelbig@netscape.net

2. Dual Meets Start this weekend - If you do not know which dual meet team you are on, check the meets and events page of this website and follow the dual meets link. We have rosters posted on the bottom. All meets on the dual meet page are autoenter - which means we will assume you are swimming unless you tell us by the Wednesday before the meet that you can not.

3. It is assumed that all parents of athletes on this team and willing to volunteer to help run meets and fuctions. For all dual meet teams - parents should always be prepared to volunteer. For the coed team meet this weekend - we will probably need just about one parent per athlete to time or run or help out in some way.

4. Make sure all dolphins have cards and swipe in every time they are coming in the building - we need to have an accurate roster of who is in the building at all times in the event of an emergency.

5. Please arrive to practices on time - the first part of every practice is warm up. If an athlete is late to warm up their changes of getting injured increase by an overwhelming factor. The older an athlete gets the more crucial a good warm up is to their health.

6. Make sure you are staying for the whole practice - the last thing we do at practice is a warm down or activity where warm down is implied. If kids do not warm down they increase their chances of injury as well because of built up blood lactate which can harm muscle fiber.
