Dear Dolphins,

Congratulations on a job well done. The coaching staff didn’t want the season to end. The 2004-2005 Swim Season has been a tremendous success. I want to begin by thanking the parents, the volunteers, the MYPO, the coaching staff and all of you wonderful swimmers. You have made the Montclair YMCA proud. This newsletter will recap our championship meets and our awesome accomplishments over the course of the season. Please keep checking the website to stay abreast of all pertinent information regarding fees (spring and summer), group placements as well as practice and meet schedules ahead.

We look forward to a productive spring session leading into another highly successful long course season. We are very excited for continued success into the next competitive season and can’t wait to be back on the pool deck in full force.

Thank you again for a wonderful season.

Brian Greene

Dolphin Staffing News

I am happy to announce that the present coaching staff has committed to be intact for the next three seasons. (Spring, Summer and Fall/Winter 2005-2006) While there will be some changes in responsibilities and scheduling, we are very excited to be able to continue providing you with an experienced and caring staff. I will be remaining as “Head Coach” and will be streamlining my focus to the age group program and team administration. I will continue to work with all groups, remain as an advisor and will oversee all practice levels. I have listed below the changes and additions that you will see over the next few seasons.

Jon Siegel will remain as “Assistant Head Coach” and continue current administrative tasks including website and database management. Jon’s main role will shift to oversee the National and Senior training groups. Jon will continue to work with all groups as needed.

Paulo Madeira will continue working closely with the Junior 1, Senior and National groups. He will be on deck at least 3-4 times a week (during Spring, Summer and Fall/Winter seasons) and will be heavily involved with developing the season plan and workouts for these groups.

Kenny Platt will continue his role working with Jr2, Jr1, Seniors and will assist as needed with all groups. Kenny will work closely with me in developing the age group program. Kenny will be working this Spring and Next Fall/Winter season, but will be working primarily with his Springboard Diving team this summer, but will on occasion drop by to help out.

Carly Orpurt will continue in her present role assisting Jr2, Jr1 and Seniors during the Spring and next Fall/Winter season. She will spend much of the Summer at Ocean County YMCA near her home and family and we look forward to her return.

Dawn Amodio will continue working with Intro, Novice and Jr Prep and will be working with BG and Jon to further develop and integrate the dry-land program.

Assistant Coaches Mike Mascellino and Simone Fanous will continue to be working with the age group program as needed.

We are very happy to announce the hiring of two new coaches and we are currently looking into three more candidates with the goal in mind of having 10 coaches on staff.

Lauren Sharkey who is currently a Kindergarten teacher. She is a former club and college swimmer and has spent the past 5 years coaching at Metuchen Edison YMCA. Her primary role will be to assist the Jr 1 and Senior levels.

Andy Davis who works as an engineer and has just moved to Montclair from Wisconsin. Although new to coaching, he has extensive experience as a swimmer on the club level as well as at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His knowledge of the sport has impressed us and we are excited to help him along the way as he develops as a coach.

Future Plans:

My Goal for the future is to have approximately 180 kids on the competitive team (the current number is 248) with two girls teams and two boys teams in our current pool time. Additionally I would like to have approximately 80 kids on a developmental team. (with additional pool time) The developmental team will swim in a coed format of invitational style meets and will join the team in selected competitions and events. There will be opportunities for mobility from developmental team to competitive team (and vice versa) as we are all under the umbrella of the Montclair Dolphins.

Because of our numbers we feel it is important to re-try-out all swimmers that the coaching staff feels has fallen short of the commitment necessary that being a competitive swimmer demands. While this evaluation process has already begun based on the short course season it will continue through the Spring and Summer. We will notify those individuals who need to re-try-out at the end of the Summer.

One of our primary goals is to always be committed to those who are committed to the Dolphins at the level that we feel is appropriate. We will be evaluating all swimmers and families based on commitment to the team, attitude, attendance and parental cooperation and involvement. Our ultimate goal is to provide a safe and productive environment where all athletes can participate in a group of swimmers with similar abilities, training habits, goals and direction.

Special Recognition:

Eastern Zone Championships: Zones is the all star meet for NJ Swimming that encompasses the whole LSC where we swim other LSC’s from Maine to Virginia representing NJ. The top two athletes from NJ JO’s or Jr/Sr states who apply get selected to represent NJ on this “All Star Team.” This year we had two athletes who were able to participate and were selected.

Qualifiers include Kevin Wright, Natasha Moodie, Stephanie Ferrell and Felicia Lee,  (who could not attend because of their MYM Team commitment to Nationals) Patrick Park and Jamie Ianiro who were able to compete because it did not conflict with YWCA Jr/Sr Championships.
Patrick Park placed 10th in the 100 IM and 13th in the 50 fly. In both cases he was the top 9 year old in the event at zones.
Jamie Ianiro placed 10th in the 50 fly with a best time.
Congratulations to those who qualified and to the boys who represented NJ Swimming in stellar fashion. Great Job!

YWCA National Jr/Sr Championships: This was an exciting meet this year with 62 athletes competing (which is a marked improvement over last year’s 47 athletes). We placed fourth out of 20+ other teams which is a composite of YWCA and YMCA’s across the country.

Individual Highlights:

Alex Fishman: First SC Nationals, best Time in the 200 IM, 100 & 200 Breast, “Fish” re-cut the 100 Breast and if you have the time, it’s worth checking out his photo on the nationals page of the MYM website

Sara Rodgers: First Nationals, best Time in the 100 & 200 Back and dropped over 6 seconds 1650 Free

Mario Mlinaric: First Nationals and first year back into swimming after a two year hiatus contributed to the team effort via relays. His hard work and tenacity will ultimately serve him well.

Charlotte Richman: First SC Nationals, Contributed well on the relays and re-cut the 50 Free and 100 Fly and was an integral part of the meet writing “Charlotte’s Web” daily blog on the YMCA National website

Peter Polgar: He did a great job at his first SC nationals and we look to him to be a major part of our future…. Just starting to realize his potential

Kevin Wright: First Nationals, he dropped almost 6 seconds in the 200 Back and raced to his best 100 back time in the first half of his 200.

Kevin Jung: Best short course nationals ever and more to come!!! Kevin as always was stellar in the relays splitting a 22.3 in the free and an incredible 24.0 in the fly, Kevin re-cut the 50 free, 100 fly and narrowly missed the 100 free cut, also of note he had his best 100 breast which he swims annually at nationals

Dan Fletcher: Near Perfect Meet –Best times in 100 & 200 Back, 100 Free breaking the 49 barrier (48.75), 100 Breast and had a blistering 21.4 relay anchor

Stephanie Ferrell: At her first Nationals made finals in both 100 & 200 Breast going a 1:05.9 which put her number 1 in the TOP 16 in the country for 11/12 year olds. Steph was also the second highest scoring 12 year old at the meet.

Natasha Moodie: Re-cut both the 50 & 100 and nearly made it back at night in the 50 free placing 17th overall, Natasha rose to the occasion as she always does anchoring our relays

Felicia Lee: First SC Nationals in very memorable fashion. She set 3 YMCA National Age Group Records, 200 IM, 50 Fly (formerly held by Olympian Dara Torres set back in 1980) and who can forget her 100 fly where she placed second overall which is an amazing achievement especially considering she is 12 years old. Her 100 fly put her first on the TOP 16 list. She made it back at night in all her swims and made it into finals in the 200 IM, 100 Fly and 200 Back. She was truly AMAZING!!!

Kate O’ Leary: In her first SC Nationals “Kate The Great” re-cut the 100 & 200 Fly and 200 & 400 IM and wowed us even more in the 400 Medley Relay where she was the catalyst of getting the relay into finals by dropping a full two seconds with a phenomenal  58.1 in her 100 fly leg. Truly an INCREDIBLE moment and left us all in AWE.

Meet Highlights:

400 Medley Relay: Our relay of Felicia Lee, Stephanie Ferrell, Kate O’Leary and Natasha Moodie saved their best for last. All four girls had their best relay splits ever (Felicia 57.8, Steph 1:05.7, Kate 58.1, Natasha 53.2) placing 4th overall and being the talk of the meet when people found out that it was a 14/U relay that qualified for USA Swimming Senior Nationals. We will never forget the feeling of seeing the four girls with their flowers and everyone cheering and taking pictures of them up on the awards podium. It was a spectacular moment in Montclair YMCA Swimming history.

It’s because of your generous contributions that our 2004 Swim-A-Thon was a huge success!  Thanks to all of our swimmers, family, friends and corporate sponsors who participated in this event.

The Swim-A-Thon is the major fundraiser for our swim team.  As with all non-profit organizations, we need many volunteers and we need funds to make it possible to run the team.  What do we do with these funds?  Here are some highlights:

  • A donation of $2500 to the Special Olympics of Essex County so that they can purchase their team suits, etc.
  • Many of the coach’s “wish list” items.
  • Inspirational and informative programs like Dr. Dave, Sports Psychologist.
  • General expenses like new stopwatches, computer programs to help run the team, end-of-year awards, etc.
  • Every swim team member gets a special MYM Dolphins gift at the end of the season as well as a free brunch.

This year, we offered a unique incentive to our Swim-A-Thon participants.  A swimmer who raised $250 received a 1-hour private coaching lesson and those swimmers who raised $500 or more received a 2-hour private coaching lesson as well as an underwater videotape critique.  This incentive was well received.  We have to thank our coaches, BG and Jon, for contributing their personal time, effort and expertise to this incentive.

The other incentives, like the spirit decals, watches and t-shirts, were handed out at the Awards Brunch.  If you weren’t able to make it to the brunch, please let me know and we will make arrangements to get these prizes to you.  I can be reached at 973-831-8647 or e-mail cbassolino@aol.com.

I also want to acknowledge three exceptional members of our team who raised over $1,000 each!  They are Maya Alexander, Cassidy Bommer and Ellie Huelbig.  They engaged in this Swim-A-Thon with inimitable effort and compassion.

Again, many thanks to all who participated in our 2004 Swim-A-Thon.  You made it possible to meet many of our swim team goals.

                                                            Fondly,

                                                            Gail Bassolino

Parent’s Night Out

May 14th, 6-10 p.m.

Need a break from the kids?  How about a romantic dinner?  Want to just spend a couple of hours without interruption?

We have your answer!  The National Swim Team is offering a Parent’s Night Out on Saturday, May 14th from 6-10 p.m. at the Montclair YMCA.  Under the supervision of Gina Stravic, Activities Director at the Montclair YMCA, our National Team will take your kids swimming, play games and do arts and crafts (snack included).  This is a great way to support our National Team and have a night off.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required.  This is for kids ages K-6.  The cost for a YMCA member is $20.00 and a non-member is $25.00.  Siblings are $5.00.  You can register at the front desk of the Montclair YMCA (phone 973-744-3400).
