*              Montclair YMCA Dolphins Swim Team

Dear Dolphins,                                                                                                                                                                                                       1/4/05

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a great holiday season and are ready for the new year. We hope that everyone got some rest, enjoyed a break in the year and were able to enjoy some family time. With the championship season coming up the coaching staff is psyched to see the kids train hard and swim fast this winter/spring. We have a lot of exciting things to prepare for and this memo is to help you begin to figure it all out.

With the regular dual meet season ended for the two girls and the boys team, we would like to congratulate the Girls A team and the Boys A Team for an undefeated division championship season. The girls B team had a great season, remaining competitive throughout despite having no 15-18 athletes on the roster. We look forward to the final “regional” dual meets of the season for the Girls A, Girls B and Boys teams. The “regional dual meets” are optional for the high school aged swimmers providing that they have competed in 3 of the 4 dual meets already swum. Please remember that if you have not competed in 3 dual meets, you may not participate in Y Championship Meets.

Currently the coed team is undefeated with one more meet to decide that division’s championship. We will swim West Morris to decide the division on January 15th.

The coaching staff would like to thank all those who showed their appreciation in the form of holiday gifts. While normally we would like to personally thank everyone, the number of people who showed their appreciation was overwhelming. A huge thank you to all is in order. We truly appreciate it.

This time of year the coaches always begin to hear news from the soon to be graduating seniors about colleges. While it is a great thing to be able to share with them, it is also a huge reminder for our current High School Juniors that they need to start their college searches very soon. We would like to recommend the following to ensure that the athletes get what they need to get done ahead of time as to not interfere with their senior year training. We all know that swimming helps get kids into schools, so let’s make sure we work towards success in swimming during the college search. Make sure you plan out your SAT courses to be over the spring or summer, if you plan to take one, so come Autumn you do not have to worry about it on top of all of the stress of the first few months of senior year. Start looking at colleges now and get in a few visits this spring before colleges get out for the summer. It is crucial that you see the schools while they are in session to truly get a good idea of what they are like and can evaluate them accordingly. If nothing else, try to see a few schools of different sizes and settings so when it comes down to crunch time, you will actually know what you want. If you can get this done by the summer, you will feel a lot better about the search and be well on your way to having a stress free senior year.

We will have parent meetings to go over championships and end of season particulars on Wednesday, 1/5. Parents of 8/U Swimmers will be from 6-7 PM, Parents of 9/10 Swimmers will be from 7-8 PM and parents of 11/Older Swimmers will be from 8-9 PM. All these meeting will take place in the Holm Room at the Y this Wednesday, 1/5. Please note that parents who have been on the team for years and understand what they are getting into for the championship portion of the season do not need to attend. Please keep checking the website for hotel and meet information.

Traditionally we have a year end banquet for the team and families. One of the things we would like to do is have a slide show, so please either e-mail all the season photos you have to jpsiegelnj@aol.com or get them to Jon on a disk. JPEG files are easiest to use. Additionally we are looking to put together a yearbook, but this has never been done here and we will need a few parents to help us out. If this is something you are interested in, please reach out to Jon or Brian via e-mail and we will try and describe what we are looking for.

Ultimate Technique Camp

On 12/19 Olympian Tara Kirk came in to visit us and ran a Speedo/ Metro Swim Shop Sponsored Ultimate Technique Camp. We had about 60 kids participate. It was a great success. It was informative, educational and a good time for all those who came. She is equally as great a clinician and speaker as she is an athlete, role model and an all around great person. We wish her luck for 2008 in Bejing.
